Pearl Jam undertook a massive world tour in 2006 in support of their eighth studio album, the self-titled Pearl Jam, which was released on May 2, 2006. Before the tour began officially began, the band warmed up with their usual stop at the

The Late Show with David Letterman on May 4, which was preceded by their first appearance on Saturday Night Live in twelve years, followed by one night at the Astoria in London, England. The first leg of the tour included sixteen headlining shows covering the midwest and northeast United States, plus two nights in Toronto to open the tour. Near the end of the leg the band also taped an episode of VH1's Storytellers series. The second leg covered more of the midwest and the west coast and included fourteen headlining shows plus six show opening for Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers. Dates in the southern United States were noticeably absent. Leg three was Pearl Jam's first European tour since 2000 and included their first festival shows since Roskilde in 2000. The tour finished with stops in two nations Pearl Jam had never visited before: Croatia and Greece. They played a total of twenty-three shows in Europe (not including the Astoria warm-up show). After their seventh appearance at Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit, Pearl Jam visited Australia for the first time since 2003 for the tour's fourth leg. There were twelve Aussie headlining shows and a surprise appearance at a Melbourne Make Poverty History concert. The leg ended in Hawaii with an appearance at the Big Wave Invitational in Oahu, a headlining show in Honolulu, and a show opening for U2 in Honolulu.
