[edit] Lyrics

Alone...listless...breakfast table in an otherwise empty room
Young girl...violins(ence)...center of her own attention
Mother reads aloud, child tries to understand it
Tries to make her proud
The shades go down, it's in her head
Painted room...can't deny there's something wrong...
Don't call me daughter, not fit to
The picture kept will remind me
Don't call me daughter, not fit to
The picture kept will remind me
Don't call me...

She holds the hand that holds her down
She will...rise above...

Don't call me daughter, not fit to
The picture kept will remind me
Don't call me daughter, not fit to be
The picture kept will remind me
Don't call me...
Don't call me daughter, not fit to
The picture kept will remind me
Don't call me daughter, not fit to be
The picture kept will remind me
Don't call me...

The shades go down
The shades go down
The shades go, go, go...

[edit] Trivia & Notes

  • This song was actually introduced as "Brother" on 1992-12-31 (not to be confused with another Pearl Jam original titled Brother). At a few early shows the lyric "don't call me brother" is even spoken. Eventually the lyric and title were changed to "daughter".
  • Quite often in concert, little song snippets (or "tags", as they are commonly called) are added on to the end of Daughter. The Daughter tag from the Live On Two Legs version, for example, includes Neil Young's Rockin' In The Free World and Pearl Jam's W.M.A.
  • The Vs. lyric book states that the word "violins" is also meant to imply "violence".
