Neil Young (born November 12, 1945, Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian singer/songwriter and guitarist who grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His work is characterized by deeply personal lyrics, distinctive guitar work, and an almost instantly recognizable nasal tenor (and frequently alto) singing voice. Although he accompanies himself on several different instruments—including piano and harmonica—his style of hammer-on acoustic guitar and often idiosyncratic soloing on electric guitar are the lynchpins of a sometimes ragged, sometimes polished, yet consistently evocative sound. In more recent years, Young has started to adopt elements from newer styles of music, such as industrial and grunge, the latter of which was profoundly influenced by his own style of playing.

[edit] Mirror Ball

On June 27, 1995, Neil released Mirror Ball, on which Pearl Jam was his backup band. The recording session also yielded Merkinball, on which Neil contributes vocals and plays pump organ and guitar. Ed received a writing credit for Mirror Ball's Peace And Love.

[edit] The Bridge School

Each year since 1986 (with the exception of 1987), Neil and his wife Pegi Young have organized a concert to benefit The Bridge School, an educational program which assists children with speech and other communication impairments. It has been held at the Shoreline Amphitheter in Mountain View, CA every year except for 1988, when it was held at the Oakland Coliseum. Past performers include Bob Dylan, Sonic Youth, Tom Petty and The Who (a complete list of performers can be found here). Neil has also performed every year, sometimes with Crazy Horse, sometimes solo, and a few times with the other members of Crosby, Stills, Nash And Young.
