Big Band, Little Footprint

As we've seen in the past, Pearl Jam will be donating money in an attempt to mitigate the CO₂ generated by their touring.

Pearl Jam announced today that it will voluntarily mitigate carbon emissions from the band's 2009 world tour by partnering with the Cascade Land Conservancy (CLC), a national leader in urban forest restoration, to plant approximately 33 acres of native trees and plants in communities around the Puget Sound. Pearl Jam’s donation of $210,000 will fund the urban forestry project and mitigate more than 7,000 metric tons of carbon. Conservation International chief adviser, climate and water, Michael Totten estimates Pearl Jam’s actual carbon emissions from its 32-date 2009 tour to be 5,474 metric tons of CO2. The band will also track, calculate and mitigate its carbon for their current 2010 tour.



“A band on tour generates a lot of carbon,” said Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam’s guitarist and founder. “We are constantly moving, using carbon-dependent forms of transportation and a great deal of energy. Since 2003, we have elected to mitigate our carbon output by tracking and calculating our emissions and contributing money to projects that strategically work to improve the environment. We view this as a cost of doing business.”

OK, I probably should have been hyping MTV's March Madness before now, but seriously ... would everyone go punish My Chemical Romance for eliminating Pearl Jam?  I've never been so embarrassed to be a Pearl Jam fan.

For weeks I've been talking up and soliciting suggestions for an episode exploring songs about escape - escaping a person, escaping a place, escaping a problem. As one who likes to wander, this recurring theme in Eddie's songwriting has always had a special resonance with me. So on #45, we're hitting the road and exploring new territory on the podcast. 



I'm probably not going to ruin any surprises for you by telling you that MFC makes an appearance here. It's a great rendition but Ed has a "perfectly imperfect" moment on the last verse and flubs my favorite lines of the song so I thought it only appropriate to include here.

One More Shot at Pearl Jam's MSG Shows

For those of you who got locked out of the Ten Club's presale for NYC, you've got one more shot.  Check you e-mail for a special password.

Hootenanny For Haiti Guitar For Haiti

You can continue to give to the victims of Haiti's earthquake by bidding on a guitar used by Duff at the concert and signed by Duff and Mike.  It's estimated value is $7,500.  Although there are 12 more days to go, the guitar is currently a steal for $1,500.

Pearl Jam Join The Stooges on Stage

Don't get too excited, they didn't play an music.  Here's a clip from PR-Inside:

PEARL JAM star EDDIE VEDDER and the members of GREEN DAY showed their pun k rock credentials at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony whe n they joined IGGY POP and THE STOOGES onstage.

Pop was struggling to get industry bosses at the gala fired up during p erformances of Search & Destroy and I Wanna Be Your Dog until Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, who inducted the band, joined them and encouraged his bandmates and others to get up onstage.

Iggy Pop then asked, "Do we have any rocker boys...? Who wants to get u p here...? Come on rich people. Let's get some rich ladies up here." Vedder, Armstrong and Green Day stars Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool then pogo danced around the stage, belting out I Wanna Be Your Dog with the band.

Looks like this is legit..  Pearl Jam appears to have done a few songs for Target employees at the Target Center in Minneapolis today.

Screams of "sell out" are ringing through Twitter, but that's probably just jealousy.

March 15: McCready on Fallon, PJ at RRHoF Dinner

Is RRHoF an acceptable acronym for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?  Oh well, most of the Pearl Jam guys are at the induction dinner (with Mike Watt and the Boss and others).

And Mike plans on shredding with the Roots band later tonight on the Jimmy Fallon Show!

2010 Midwest/East Coast Pearl Jam Dates

 Now the Twitterverse can REALLY light up!

Pearl Jam announced today that they will play 11 Midwest and East Coast tour dates in May of 2010. The tour kicks-off on May 3rd at Sprint Center in Kansas City and wraps on May 21st at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Pearl Jam's U.S. tour follows the band's previously announced headlining appearance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation Festival on May 1st. Band of Horses will open all shows except the May 20th Madison Square Garden engagement, where The Black Keys will open.

Between the recent tweet hinting at US tour dates, a free Brad download, and an iTunes Celebrity Playlist Podcast featuring Stone and Jeff, I’m wondering if anyone is even going to listen to today’s podcast with so many other things competing for the attention of the Pearl Jam fan. I hope you find the time to tune in though because episode #43 pays a little homage to Jeff Ament on his birthday and is a fun look back at pastSNL appearances as we prepare for the guys’ triumphant return to late night television. 



Still taking email and voicemail suggestions for the “escape” podcast coming soon on #45. I also want to encourage everyone to submit a picture of themselves to be used in a fan collage in the image artwork for #52 – the one year anniversary of the podcast! If you have ATS gearto sport in your picture, then all the better but it should be something to represent you as a fan of the podcast and, more importantly, a fan of the band. 2009 Posters For Sale

I'm not sure when these went up, but judging from this tweet by Tom Tomorrow, it must have been in the last couple of days.  The vast majority of the posters from Pearl Jam's 2009 tour are for sale in the Ten Club Goods Section.

All That's Sacred, Episode #42 is now available, and you will probably also want to check out the podcast, Seattle Rock Guy.  Episode #8 which features All That's Sacred's Donny Anderson as guest host.

A guest spot hosting Seattle Rock Guy's podcast, a raucous Hootenanny For Haiti, and maybe a little weariness in general had me wondering if #42 was going to happen on schedule. I'm happy to say I managed to pull it together and result is, hopefully, a fun collection that's both topical and reflective.



I've also noticed that my unplanned, unstructured shows tend to run a little long and this week is no exception. I'll let you decide if this is a good thing or not.
