Top 5 Pearl Jam Moments of 2019 #1

#1, Record Store Day

Pearl Jam hadn't dropped vinyl on Record Store Day as a band for several years, but our patience was rewarded in 2019 with a pair of classic shows after Pearl Jam was declared the 2019 Record Store Day Ambassadors.  Sure, both shows have previously been released in other formats, but this was the first time on vinyl for both.

First, was their 2005 Record Store Day performance at Easy Street Records in Seattle, previously released as an EP on CD.  This year is was available in record stores on vinyl, and via the Ten Club on red vinyl.

Then, later, in November, we were treated to their 1992 MTV Unplugged performance.  Both are great, iconic shows, and even though neither record is a full show (Easy Street is a sampling of the show, and Unplugged is the missing the Rockin' in the Free World encore), both are great collectibles worth visiting your turntable for often in the coming year as you wait for Album #11.

Top 5 Pearl Jam Moments of 2019 #2

#2, Eddie Tours Europe

Perhaps to refresh himself and stir creative juices, Eddie took a break from two years in the studio with his band mates to hit the road across Europe.  Hitting a mix of small venues and festivals, Ed brought his individual brand of music.

Top 5 Pearl Jam Moments of 2019 #3

#3, Vault Release: Seattle 12/8/1993

Pearl Jam's Vault releases always seem to make our list, but there was quite a bit of debate on this one.  Did we need another 1993 release?  Las Vegas 1993 was Vault #5.  Was this show actually deserving of a place of honor?  Some claim it's particularly sloppy.

Quality and necessity aside, in a quiet Pearl Jam year, it's no doubt this was going to make the list.  Check out the album on vinyl, CD, or digital formats.

Top 5 Pearl Jam Moments of 2019 #4

#4, A Grammy Nomination for Jeff Ament

A surprising amount of Pearl Jam news this year was actually Soundgarden news.  Joe Spix, Jeff Ament, and [his brother] Barry Ament were nominated for a GRAMMY this year for Best Record Packaging for their work on the Chris Cornell career retrospective, which contains a few Temple of the Dog songs and "Hey Baby! (Land of the New Rising Sun)," a Hendrix tune covered by McCready, Ament, Cameron, and Cornell (one member short of Temple of the Dog).

You'll have to tune in next year to see if the nomination turns into a win, but hey, maybe you'll see that in next year's Top Ten.

Top 5 Pearl Jam Moments of 2019 #5

I hate to admit that there are not 10 great moments to celebrate in 2019, but let's be honest, Pearl Jam played zero shows and released zero new music in 2019.  In a year when there were no major appearances by the band, and they stayed sequestered, possibly, working on a new album for 2020, here is what we've come up with to celebrate.

#5, Infinite Color and Sound

If you were a fan of Mike McCready's 2018 project with Kate Neckel blending Mike's trippy sonic creations with Kate's performance art, you had a chance to catch entirely new live creations in Seattle, New York, and New Jersey in 2019 as the show went on tour.

You also had a chance to collect three 7-inch vinyls of the music at the Ten Club.

Now, however, your only chance is the sample below, put out by HockeyTalkter Records.

Peak to Sky, July 6th, 2019

This week, the Ten Club announced a music festival, Peak to Sky, curated Mike McCready on July 6th, in Big Sky, Montana, featuring some of his favorite musicians: Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses, Brandi Carlile, and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters.

Tickets go on sale April 19th, you can get more information here.

No word on whether other members of Pearl Jam will be present, but given that Jeff Ament was born in and currently owns a home and studio in Montana, it's hard to imagine that he won't stop by.

Infinite Color & Sounds Vinyl Singles

If you're a big fan of the Infinite Sound and Color project where Mike McCready pedlays music while Kate Neckel painted, then maybe you'd like to own a little piece of history.  The Ten Club, with very little fanfare, has released three vinyl singles featuring music and artwork from the project.
The six tracks on these three singles document the very first time Mike McCready & Kate Neckel collaborated on their Sound Painting Series. As Mike experimented with atmospheric soundscapes and guitar loops, Kate created the visual piece with various mediums on a large canvas, each influencing the other during this initial session. What was captured, both musically and on canvas, are majestic & ethereal. Hope you enjoy these special and limited releases, which are the songs that influenced Infinite Color & Sound's first painting, Mellowtron Shots.
You can buy all three singles as a set ($39 + $8 domestic S&H + tax) or individually ($15 + $6 domestic S&H + tax).  The tracks are below, in order left to right.

Pearl Jam Are Your 2019 Record Store Day Ambassadors!

What does that even mean?  Well, not a whole lot.  Are we getting a really cool Pearl Jam release this April 13th for Record Store Day?  Previous Ambassadors (Run The Jewels, St. Vincent, Metallica, Dave Grohl, Chuck D, and Jack White) have put out RSD releases while serving as Ambassadors, but some have not.

Given that Pearl Jam, as a band, has not regularly released anything on Record Store Day, and that they have a new album in the works that is, by all accounts, nowhere near ready for release, we'd have to guess that if something is coming, it won't be mind blowing.  Have we gotten a little bitter about the lack of great Pearl Jam releases over the past five years?

Still, don't forget to look for the official list of releases, and enjoy Pearl Jam's official video including Mike McCready record shopping and footage from the band's 2005 in-store performance at Easy Street Records in Seattle.

Eddie To Be Featured in Soundtrack for Return to Mount Kennedy

Some never-before-heard instrumentals by Eddie Vedder will be featured in the film, Return to Mount Kennedy, which is screen in various locations in the Pacific Northwest.

No word on whether a soundtrack for the film will ever see the light of day, but here is an excerpt about the film and Eddie's contributions from the publisher:
In 1965 Jim Whittaker led Senator Robert Kennedy to the first ascent of a remote mountain in the Yukon named after the late president, JFK. Fifty years later, the sons of the original climbing team—a raucous band manager, a candidate for governor, and a young mountaineer—embark on an expedition to the mountain to celebrate the special bond that connects them all. Featuring unreleased instrumentals by Eddie Vedder and never before seen footage and photos of Robert Kennedy, the feature-length documentary sits at the intersection of politics, human rights, environmentalism and adventure.

Pearl Jam's #11: Bleak Prospects

Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament recently spoke with Rolling Stone about progress toward Pearl Jam's next album and why we've been waiting longer for this than any other Pearl Jam album.

It seems as though there is little reason that Pearl Jam hasn't released an eleventh studio album.  Jeff points noncommittally to the death of Chris Cornell ...
“It’d be fun to record or even just write a song together,” bassist Jeff Ament says. “I think when Chris [Cornell] passed, that’s really been a tough one to wrap our heads around, and then there’s just life stuff.”
... but ultimately, has no explanation as to why the band hasn't worked together to record an album.
“We’ve gone in, probably, four or five times in the last couple of years, so we have a whole ton of unfinished stuff,” Ament says. “We’re just sort of in a little bit of limbo. I’m sure everybody’s got a bunch more riffs, and I’m sure Ed’s got a handful of journal lyrics. It’s just going to take us all getting into a room together for six weeks and just knocking something out.”
Stone is reassuring that they are still working on an album ...
“We’re going to make a record, and we’re in the middle of it,” the guitarist says. “We’re just going to keep plugging away until we get one done.”
Unfortunately, those are not the words of a band with a passionate message to get out.  Although Stone admits that he enjoyed being able to release "Can't Deny Me," there is little else in the article to tell us that the band is excited about working on this album.  We're either going to be waiting a long time, or we're going to get an album from a bored band, writing and performing out of a sense of obligation.

Neither of those options sound good for the near future of Pearl Jam.
