Help a Brother Out!!

TwoFeetThick has posted a plea via their Twitter page for extra newsletters that you might have laying around.  I don't know what they want with them (I consider it rude to ask), but it has something to do with scanning and thusly will result in really excellent Pearl Jam content on their website.  Hit them up with an e-mail if you can help.

anyone out there willing to send us extra fan club newsletters as a donation or a trade for some live PJ?

Drip. Drip. Drip.

I do believe the first leak from the new album has occurred.  Apparently, Pearl Jam was working on a video at the Showbox last night and someone happened to catch a recording in a digital format.  Sadly, I can provide no links to the embargoed recording, but you can certainly hear some more about it on the Red Mosquito Forum or listen for it Monday night on The Tonight Show.

Green River Photos

Man, the web is bursting with photos of the Green River shows from this past weekend.

You can get your fix from Flickr photostreams by the Ten Club or human?.

Jeff kicks ass!

TwoFeet Thick has also thrown up a few YouTube videos from both shows.

Jamcasting

Yeah, that's right ... I'm trying to coin a new term.  Maybe it should be PearlCasting... or PearlJasting ... or no ... let's go with JamCasting.  If you're like me, you have a hefty podcast section in your iPod.  I easily spend as much time listening to podcasts as I do listening to the mp3s loaded onto my iPod.

Pearl Jam released a ten-part series earlier this year, called Ten Code, to promote the Reissue of Ten, and it was great, but can't we get that kind of great stuff on an on-going basis?  It turns out, you can.

Given to Cast: Started by Red Mosquito User, PJTEXAS, around the release of Pearl Jam, Given to Cast features a lot of current Pearl Jam news and concert selections, and has recently started regular releases back up in anticipation of the 2009 tour and release of a new album.  Click here to discuss Given to Cast.

All That's Sacred: Started just this week by Red Mosquito User, bigeye21.  The focus is less on news and more on playing rare music and commentary on those recordings and the personal experiences of fans.  Click here to discuss All That's Sacred.

So, those of you hitting the road with Ed in June or Pearl Jam later this year, dig up that auxiliary wire for your car stereo and load up that iPod for the road trip.

Past Christmas Singles Available at 10C

See something you don't have?  Get it for four bucks (slightly more if you're not a WMA).

Win Tickets To The Tonight Show Premiere

TwoFeetThick repost:

We’re crazy to decrease our own chances, but if you enter the The Tonight Show Trivia Sweepstakes, you just might win tickets to the June 1st Premiere, with musical guests Pearl Jam.   Follow this link to enter!

Says the contest website:   Each winner will receive a pair of tickets to the very first show… And two winners will be announced each Friday on The Tonight Show Blog! Good luck!

The TFT Interview: “Grunge is Dead” Author, Greg Prato

Checkout TwoFeetThick's Interview with Greg Prato, author of Grunge is Dead

My favorite question:

Jessica: What were some of the most surprising things that people told you for the book? I geeked out on all the Pearl Jam stuff where you have Eddie sleeping in the basement while they were recording.

Greg: There was definitely a lot of stuff about Pearl Jam that I didn’t know. Eddie talking about the first Pearl Jam show. I also like the story where Eddie says he spoke to Chris Cornell afterwards and his eyes and his teeth were glowing and that he basically looked like Satan. [laughs] I didn’t realize, when I spoke with Jeff, that there was some friction in Pearl Jam between Vs. and Vitalogy. He said that if ever there was a time period in their career where it made sense for them to break up, that would have been it.

Jessica: Well, that was 1994 you’re talking about. A lot happened that year.

Greg: I was kind of surprised about that because as a fan looking in, I would have thought that that was when they may have been at their strongest. That was when the whole world was worshipping them and any album they would release would shoot to the top of the charts and they would sell out huge stadiums and everything. Which of course, they still do, but back then it was crazy how widespread they were.

Mike McCready Discusses the Restroom Access law with King-5 TV

In case you missed it, the story of Washington state's Restroom Access Law has been covered beautifully by twofeetthick, but if you can't get enough of it, the Ten Club reports that Mike was on Seattle TV this week speaking about it.

Mike McCready and fellow Crohn’s and colitis activist Broh Landsman appeared on KING-5 Morning News this week to help lay out the facts about the recently passed Restroom Access Law in Washington State.

Mike McCready and fellow Crohn’s and colitis activist Broh Landsman appeared on KING-5 Morning News this week to help lay out the facts about the recently passed Restroom Access Law in Washington State.

With a series of safeguards in place for both consumers and business owners, the Restroom Access Law was created to help individuals with certain medical conditions, such as Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis, easy access to employee-only restrooms in retail establishments.

A Little More Album News Trickles In

TwoFeetThick reports that Mike was on "The Garage Monkey" on Seattle FM 104.9 talking about Flight of Mars and CCFA and saw fit to drop a couple of tidbits on the new Pearl Jam album.

-The band wrote most of the music with Brendan O’Brien, but without Ed, in LA.  They tightened it up, then Ed came in about halfway through to add to it.

- The band has just received final mix of the new album and are reviewing it.

- They hope to release the new album later this year - not end of year, more like fall.

Does that mean that the album has been digitized, thereby facilitating possible leaks?  OMFGWTFBBQSAUCE!!!

UK Journalist Listens to the New Pearl Jam?

TwoFeetThick repost:

UK Journalist Listens To The New PJ?

Hmmmm.  So we stumbled upon this blog called Hear>You>Me, maintained by UK blogger James McMahon, who we believe is the features editor for longtime UK music mag NME (aka New Musical Express).  He’s stateside, in Seattle and reports in his blog that he had a listen the new Pearl Jam album and was going to have some face time with some or all of the boys for a future NME feature .  Click below links for his full write-ups, but important bits are excerpted below:

In his May 15th entry, James writes: I’m actually going (to) Seattle tomorrow to interview Pearl Jam forNME. The fourteen year old me is very excited. “WAAAAAANCE, UPON A TIIIIIIMMMME…”

James reports on May 17th, from the Edgewater Hotel in Seattle:  Today is actually a bit of a free day - I’m hearing the new Pearl Jam album later, but I don’t actually speak to them until tomorrow.

From his May 18th entry: I’m sat in a PR’s hotel room at The Edgewater listening to the new Pearl Jamrecord - a release form I’ve just signed means that I can’t tell you the song titles, while it doesn’t even have a name yet. Yet what I can tell you, it’s that it’s ever, ever so punchy. Eddies vocals sound more honeyed than raspy and there’s a ballad stuck right in the middle that’s just him and a guitar, but is absolutely drenched in strings. There’s hardly any guitar leads either…

It’s alllllll happening….

Uncut Magazine Needs Your Questions

Working to create an interview to be published in a future edition, Uncut Magazine is soliciting questions to be asked of Eddie Vedder.  Stuff like, "Hey Eddie, what's your Red Mosquito username?  Do you at least read the news section?  Can we get an advanced copy of the new album, so that we can post a review?  What do you think of B?  Can you pull him on stage the next time you visit North Carolina?"  Sorry, I got carried away.  Here's what Uncut has to say:

Eddie Vedder – political activist, soundtrack composer, sports fan and sometime rock star – is soon to be the subject of Uncut ’s regular An Audience With...feature, and we’re after your questions.

So, we wonder, is there anything you’ve always wanted to ask him?

Where’s his favourite place to surf?

What’s the prize record in his apparently huge collection of classic vinyl?

What does he remember about playing with The Who at the Royal Albert Hall in 2000?

Send your questions to uncutaudiencewith@ipcmedia.com by Wednesday, May 20.

Your best questions and of course, Vedder's answers will be published in a future edition of the magazine.

Jeff Gets Jacked

I don't know why I get my Rolling Stones so much later than the rest of the world, but that's beside the point.  AndySlash reports that the May 28th issue has a blurb about Jeff Ament getting robbed outside the Southern Tracks Recording Studio in Atlanta.

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament was the victim of a violent robbery outside Southern Tracks Recoding Studio in Atlanta, where the band is recording a new album with producer Brendan O'Brien. According to a police report, Ament and a band employee pulled up to the rear of a studio on the afternoon of April 27 when three assailants emerged from the woods wearing masks and brandishing knives. The robbers smashed the windows of a rented jeep and stole $3,000 in cash and $4,320 worth of goods. Ament was chased and knocked to the ground, sustaining a head laceration. No arrests have been made. Pearl Jam declined to comment.

Ground Control Magazine Reviews Pearl Jam's Entire Catalog

It's an unusual psychology to operate with when one is working in a populist medium, but some artists, sculptors, musicians and other performers are simply at their best when they feel like they're a dark horse in the race to attain popular taste or, if they've already got it, to maintain it. Maybe that adversity makes them work harder, maybe it makes them feel like they have something to prove, or maybe it's the space in which the artist or band in question is most comfortable because that oppressive air (or the perception of it) allows them to feel like they're coming from behind and so breeds the most potent, creative results for them, but it isn't unusual for an artist to deliberately construct or manipulate a scenario and put themselves in a position that forces them to overcome in order to survive; that desire transcends artistic discipline or musical genre.

Thus opens the review by Bill Adams of Ground Control Magazine.  After opening with a little band history (no suprizes for the Pearl Jam elite), he proceeds to review all eight Pearl Jam studio albums.  Though he does grade each album or the discography as a whole, it's not the kindest of reviews, although he seems to be trying to keep bias at bay.  Here are some excerpts.

Vs.

While the lion's share of the songs on Vs. do walk with a much-emboldened swagger that suits Pearl Jam's growth and the rise they experienced after the reception of Ten, that isn't to say it's a flawless offering. Both “W.M.A.” and “Rats” particularly are a little too meandering and tepid for their own good (a fact made unavoidable by Jeff Ament's far-too-soft and busy basslines which have been pressed too far forward in the mixes in contrast to both the harder-edged songs like “Go” and more dramatic ones like “Daughter”) but, blessedly, they function only as brief interludes and so not much focus lands on them.

Vitalogy

Fifteen years later and it's still difficult to listen to Vitalogy. Now though, it's not because of the outside stimulus circulating at the time of the album's release—more that, on a comparative scale to the preceding albums, it just wasn't up to the standard already established. To date, Vitalogy still stands as the weak link in Pearl Jam's catalogue.

Binaural

While Pearl Jam has always been linked (if only by virtue and coincidence of geography and timing) to the Grunge scene that aerated out of Seattle around the same time that Vedder and company happened to break through, it would be a grievous overstatement to say that they were ever poster boys for the genre. While their peers were crossbreeding punk, pop and metal to develop all-new brands of anthem, Pearl Jam was following trends found in classic rock (Pink Floyd-ian themes of alienation, disillusionment and frustration coupled with stomping rock in the vein of Neil Young & Crazy Horse along with the guitar heroics of Pete Townshend—all processed with a uniquely American sensibility of course) while occasionally slipping onto inroads of art rock territory.  [...]  With Binaural though, Pearl Jam inadvertently found a way to reconcile their art rock leanings with their increasingly warhorse, classic songwriting style.

Pearl Jam

Eight records in and five after they began struggling to decide what they wanted to say to their audience, Pearl Jam’s self-titled album lives up to the aforementioned ethos. For the first time since Vs., the assembled members of the last surviving grunge band have finally started writing together and actually sound like a band again; throwing all of their individual talents toward producing great individual songs rather than simply assembling an album’s worth of material. The results manifest themselves right away in the opening track, “Life Wasted,” and the point is made explicit—somewhere between the colossal flop that was Binaural and Pearl Jam, the band ceased throwing everything at the wall and has started editing their content again so that, rather than floating a couple of decent songs per album in a tepid pool of overindulgent dreck, there isn’t a single track on Pearl Jam that isn’t essential.

Flight to Mars Photos

The official site just uploaded a bunch of shots of Flight to Mars at the Showbox taken by Anna Knowlden.   If you're a regular poster on giventowail, a Mike's Maniac, or ... let's face it, a Pearl Jam fan, you should enjoy the gallery.

Hey, Thanks, Ed King!

Ask Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist, Ed King, what the best cover he's ever heard is, and he'll tell you it's Pearl Jam.  At least that's what he told his fans as part of a recent thread on is official forum.

Q - What's the best cover you've ever seen/heard by another band?

A - Pearl Jam doing the Who song THE REAL ME last year (VH1's "Rock Honors" in 2008).  THAT was the best cover I've ever heard...it had it ALL.  That is the ultimate tribute to a band.  It's perfect.

That's mighty nice of ya'.  Maybe Pearl Jam will give us a cover of the Ballad of Curtis Loew this fall!

Pick Tracks for Pearl Jam's Rock Band Project

I would say that there is a version of Rock Band: Pearl Jam in our future, but the word "project" makes me hesitant.  Still, Ten Club is offering you a big opportunity for you to gain exposure for your favorite tracks.

Pearl Jam Rock Band Project Coming Next Year

05.11.09

We need your help! Ten Club, MTV Games and Harmonix’s Rock Band, and Rhapsody are teaming up to let you, Pearl Jam’s biggest fans, help us choose the best versions of Pearl Jam live songs that will be presented for the first-ever fan voted set list for a forthcoming Rock Band project.

Your expertise will help us determine which of these versions is worthy of making the cut. Just click on the songs you like and open up the Rhapsody playlist widget for that particular song. Once you have the widget open, listen to the version you think is the best. The versions that are played the most times will be deemed the best versions and will then be entered into consideration to make the final “set list” vote.

Note: Those of you who aren’t Rhapsody subscribers will have to go to hereto get your free trial subscription so you can use the play list.

You’ve got your work cut out for you.

Did Pearl Jam Ruin It For Everyone?

... so speaketh Beth Mann.  As much as your average Pearl Jam fan loathes Creed, I don't think we're quite ready to take responsibility for their unexplained popularity.

Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam started a movement of self-serious, white guy rock that has been dismal and morose and needlessly melodramatic. Because of Pearl Jam, we’ve been forced to listen to the likes of Creed, Puddle of Mudd, Staind, Three Doors Down and a slew of other slacken-face maudlinites.

Check YOur Mailboxes! It's Christmas!

Apparently Ten Club got sick of hearing the Brits complain about having to wait for their Christmas singles for months after we Americans had gotten bored with ours.  Reports are in that the 2008 Christmas Single has arrived in South America and Europe.

A: Santa Cruz

B: Golden State (with Corin Tucker?)

Is that Eddie in a Santa suit?  Boom?  No one in particular?  Thank you, Pearl Jam, for the photographs.

Watch the Red Mosquito Forum for an audio rip, surely that's coming soon!

This, from the official site!   Just how big of a Pearl Jam completist are you?  Here is the link straight to the CD.

Deranged Diction Releases Double Disc Set - Reunion shows scheduled

05.06.09

Original Montana Hardcore band featuring Jeff Ament releases a double disc set available now on Feedback Records at https://www.pearljam.com/max and coming >>> to an independent record store near you. The set features a re-release of the band's original cassette-only 1983 debut "No Art, No Cowboys, No Rules" on the first disc. The second disc documents a reunion where 10 songs come to life after 25 years.

Here's Jeff's account:

Deranged Diction, Montana’s First Hardcore Band

Missoula, Montana, 1981-83.

Jon Donahue and I met Bruce Fairweather skateboarding the brick banks at the University of Montana in September of 1981. Within a month, we were rehearsing as Deranged Diction with Bill the drummer, playing songs by Black Flag, 999, the Dead Kennedys, the Ramones and the Clash. We played a half dozen shows that school year, mostly with new drummer Sergio Avenia, with a summer assignment to write some of our own songs. Fall quarter 1982, Jon moved back to California, so we needed a new singer. Tom Kipp approached us and we wrote and recorded our first batch of songs which included "Pruning" which ended up on a compilation called "We Got Power" and the Flipper-inspired "Periscope." Tim Healy took over vocals in March of 1983 and we wrote and recorded six new songs, including "Only" and "I'm an Amerikan." We put these songs on a cassette called "No Art, No Cowboys, No Rules" and sold and traded them through fanzines likeMaximum Rock and Roll and Flipside.

Deranged Diction, Seattle Era

Seattle, Washington, 1983-84.

Sergio, Bruce and I decided to move to Seattle in May of 1983 with the idea of finding a new singer for our band. We put a "singer wanted" ad in the Rocket and our first tryout with Rod Moody was a great fit, and he played guitar which gave us a bigger heavier sound. We wrote 10 new songs with Rod and played shows at the Metropolis with the Butthole Surfers, Husker Du, Ill Repute, Stalag 13 and local Seattle bands the Accused, Malfunkshun, the Rejectors and the Silly Killers.

In early 1984, I quit the band to start Green River with Mark, Steve and Alex. Unfortunately, we never recorded a song.

Seattle, Washington, 2008.

I ran into Rod at Easy Street Records and reminisced about our days in Deranged Diction and he mentioned having a rehearsal tape of the songs we wrote together. I listened and we thought it was a shame that we never recorded them. Rod and I approached Bruce and Sergio about recording those songs. We went into Avast studios and recorded and mixed it in 4 days in the spirit of how we might have done it 24 years earlier. It was a blast playing with my old friends again and it’s sounds pretty damn good, if I say so myself.

-- Jeff Ament, formerly Jeff Diction

How the West (and South) Was Won

OK, I'm a bad blogger.  I caught hell in the forums for not reposting this post from twofeetthick.com.  I'm not going to make the same mistake twice, so I'll tell you about this post as well.

The long and short of it?  Maybe Pearl Jam will tour in the West and the South this fall.  Maybe.

Eddie at the Lynch Foundation Benefit

Yeah, you want this too, don't you?

Ed Video Interview from Lynch Foundation Benefit

Our boy Ed talked to the man himself David Lynch the night of the “Change Begins Within” Concert back on April 4th, and here is the video the David Lynch Foundation made available on their video blog website

Fave quote, re the Momma Son tape: “I don’t remember spending more than 3 or 4 hours on those 3 songs…I have a family now, I get to travel…my life’s quite full, I think it’s the best life I’ve ever lived…so far…and I think ‘Wow, that was an important 3 or 4 hours’ “. Enjoy!

Oops! More Weekend Pearl Jam!

EDIT: I guess I knew what I was doing.  Ed has been forced to cancel his appearance.

The twofeetthick twitter feed reminded me that I forgot about an Eddie appearance on Sunday!

 Repost from twofeetthick:

Another Tweet just came through on the Pearl Jam Message Pit:

“Coo Roo coo coo coo coo coo coo”

The little birdy’s channeling a bit of Bob McKenzie, eh?

He’s in such a giddy mood that he tweeted this second little ditty….

Tweet, tweet, hear the beat,

Give me something good to eat.

(like deep dish pizza)

You’ll be sweet and on your feet,

All paid up (by May 3rd) - and in your seat.

Just in case you didn’t pick up on the references, Bob and Doug McKenzie are famously Canadian fictional characters played by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, made famous on Second City TV back in the 80’s.

The sketch’s signature “Coo Roo coo coo coo coo coo coo” theme, according to Dave Thomas in an interview on CBC News: The Hour, is based on the flute music used in Canadian television nature vignettes, such asHinterland Who’s Who.

(and OH, did they make Kathy D. laugh - I still have the 45 of  “Take Off”. ) And surely we know that Chicago is famous for it’s yummy deep dish pizza!

There is a rumor floating around of an August 21st date at Molson Arena in Toronto…I guess it all remains to be seen come Monday or so! Stay tuned to PearlJam.com.

thanks B.Smith for the heads up!
